Overview
The Department of Computer Science, ADGIPS, organized an Academic Visit for the 80th Foundation Day of CSIR–National Physical Laboratory (NPL) on 5th January 2026.
The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to India’s premier research institution specializing in metrology, material sciences, and applied physics, while fostering awareness about the practical integration of computer science in scientific experimentation and data analysis.
About the Event
- The 80th Foundation Day Celebration of CSIR–NPL was presided over by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, PMO, Department of Space, and Department of Atomic Energy.
During the event, the Minister inaugurated two world-class research facilities:
- National Environmental Standard Laboratory (NESL)– the world’s second such facility, marking India’s advancement in environmental calibration and governance.
- National Primary Standard Facility for Solar Cell Calibration– the world’s fifth, developed in collaboration with PTB, Germany, achieving an unparalleled measurement precision with an uncertainty level of 0.35%.
Dr. Jitendra Singh described CSIR–NPL as a living monument of India’s scientific excellence. He recalled that NPL has been operational since the pre-Independence era and plays a vital role in maintaining the Indian Standard Time (IST) through its world-renowned atomic clock.
He emphasized that science and technology reforms are driving India’s socio-economic transformation and highlighted the importance of making institutions like NPL accessible to students to spark curiosity and inspire research-driven innovation.
Key Highlights
- Inauguration of two internationally significant laboratories in environmental and solar metrology.
- Release of 14 Phytochemical BNDs, 2 Gas BNDs, and 1 Silica Fume BND, enhancing India’s metrological traceability and standardization ecosystem.
- Signing of multiple MoUs and technology transfer agreements to promote indigenous innovation and startup collaboration.
- Encouragement to treat national laboratories as centres of learning and public engagement, bridging science with society.
Visit Experience
A group of 15 students from B.Tech (CS), accompanied by Dr. Uma Rani (HOD) and Ms. Tarina Jayant (Faculty Coordinator), participated in the Foundation Day celebration and toured NPL’s advanced laboratories. The visit provided students with rich insights into scientific experimentation, precision measurement, and data-driven research.
Students visited two major laboratories, where they observed experiments and learned about real-world applications of scientific concepts:
- Rheology and Hydrodynamics Laboratory : Students explored the flow behavior and viscosity of complex fluids, learning how rheological measurements and hydrodynamic stability studies are conducted using automated and sensor-based equipment. They gained exposure to the role of data acquisition systems and computational simulations in analyzing fluid mechanics and material behavior.
- Crystallography Laboratory : In this lab, students learned about crystal structure determination and material characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopy. They understood how computational modeling assists in studying crystal lattices and molecular arrangements, which are critical for research in nanotechnology, semiconductor design, and material science.
Through these lab visits, students connected theoretical learning with practical experimentation, observing how computer science, data analytics, and IoT systems integrate seamlessly into advanced scientific research.

The Academic Visit for the 80th Foundation Day of CSIR–National Physical Laboratory was a deeply enriching academic experience. Students gained hands-on exposure to laboratory experimentation, scientific applications, and emerging research concepts while witnessing India’s growing prominence in global metrology. The visit strengthened students’ understanding of the synergy between Computer Science and Physical Sciences, encouraging them to pursue research-oriented and interdisciplinary innovation in the future.
