A special session on the “Significance of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007” was held on 17 November 2025 at Bhim Hall, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The session was attended by Prof. (Dr.) Jogiram Sharma, Principal, CLE, ADGIPS, Dr. Chandrika Setu Sharma, HOD, CLE, ADGIPS, and Ms. Ayushi Mathur, Assistant Professor, CLE, ADGIPS, along with 25 students from BA LL.B. and BBA LL.B. programmes.
The programme aimed to create awareness about the legal rights of parents and senior citizens and highlight the role of public interest lawyering in protecting their dignity and welfare. The event was graced by Dr. Virendra Kumar, Hon’ble Union Minister, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, NALSA, whose presence emphasized the importance of legal aid and welfare legislation in advancing social justice.
The session focused on the key provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, including the obligation of children and relatives to maintain senior citizens, the establishment of Maintenance Tribunals, and mechanisms for speedy redressal. The speakers highlighted the importance of lawyers, legal services authorities, and academic institutions in promoting legal awareness, legal aid, and community outreach for the welfare of senior citizens.
The programme proved to be highly informative and enriched students’ understanding of welfare legislation, access to justice, and the practical application of public interest lawyering in safeguarding the rights and dignity of senior citizens.
