Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta Law School organized a Debate Competition on Legal History on 6 April 2026 in Room No. 1007. The debate focused on the topic, “Did British-era reforms like abolition of Sati and widow remarriage shape constitutional values of equality and justice?” and saw active participation from 2nd Semester B.A. LL.B. (H) and B.B.A. LL.B. (H) students.
The event aimed to promote critical analysis of colonial legal reforms, enhance research and public speaking skills, and develop a deeper understanding of constitutional values. The debate followed a structured format, with B.B.A. LL.B. students speaking for the motion and B.A. LL.B. students speaking against it, including opening speeches, rebuttals, and closing statements.
Participants presented well-researched arguments, with one side emphasizing the role of British-era reforms in shaping equality and justice, while the other highlighted the influence of indigenous reformers and the freedom struggle. The rebuttal round was engaging and showcased strong analytical and reasoning skills.
The competition successfully fostered academic discussion, improved advocacy skills, and encouraged evidence-based learning. The event concluded with positive feedback from students and a formal vote of thanks to all participants and faculty members.
